Lessons Learned From Handling Hurricane Claims

The State of Louisiana has faced its fair share of hurricanes over the years, and with these storms often comes significant damage to property. So, on the anniversaries of Hurricanes Katrina, Isaac, and Ida, we’re taking a look back at some lessons we’ve learned about handling storm-related insurance claims so that you’re better prepared the next time you’re faced with this situation. Let’s get started…

1. Take plenty of videos and pictures of your home (inside & out) before and after a storm. Many of the claims that are denied state that some or all of the damage to the home was not caused by the storm. A simple picture dated before the storm can make a difference between a claim approval or denial.

2. Report the claim ASAP! The earlier you report your storm claim, the earlier the first field adjuster is likely to come out. In preparation for potential hurricanes this year, check your insurance policy for a phone number or website, so you have multiple potential avenues for reporting.

3.  Try your best to communicate with the insurance adjuster in writing (emails and text messages). Adjusters come and go on these files in the blink of an eye.  What one adjuster tells you over the phone doesn’t matter.  But if you have something in writing from the adjuster, it can work in your favor and help your claim down the road.

4. Get estimates on your own and get them early! Don’t wait for a field adjuster to come out and generate a report.  Get estimates from your own licensed and insured contractors and send them in writing to the adjusters as soon as possible!

5. Hire an attorney quickly if your claim is denied or undervalued! We are still getting calls about denied and undervalued claims a full year past Ida.  While you generally have 2 years from the date of loss to file a lawsuit on your claim, an experienced attorney can help you navigate the process and get you the money you need to repair your home.
